A rare collection of items recently purchased direct from the son of Lieutenant Frederick Victor Moore R.G.A all in very good condition.The items consist of the following 1916 dated compass and case with the initials F.V.M written onto the compass case a leather cigarette case which also have the initials F.V.M embossed into the front of the case, a R.F.C Ariel reconnaissance photograph dated 28th July 1917 and a military war office pamphlet on the Italian theatre of war dated 1917 giving a brief description of the war so far on the Italian front and useful short vocabulary and a map of the Italian front, again marked in ink on the front F.V. Moore.
Frederick’s father a major in the R.G.A served all around the world before the first world war and in 1913 Frederick was in Mauritius, his commission came through in early 1917 into the R.G.A and was posted to Flanders.The photograph was taken three days before the 3rd battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) started.In November 1917 Victor was transferred to the Italian front and was issued the war office Pamphlet dated 1917 to help defend the line at Piave close to Venice.After the war Victor was posted to Ireland during the troubles and then to Singapore garrison after which he left the army but was recalled in August 1939 and posted to Gibraltar garrison for 2 years and then finished on home stations.
The compass is in very good working condition with most of its original finish still intact, the leather case and compass are both dated 1916, the cigarette case has good aged toned leather with its poppers still in place and working.The war office pamphlet is complete with no loose pages and the map still shows good detail and sharp colours.The photograph shows enemy trenches with surrounding shell damage and is clearly marked and dated.Included with the items shown will be a copy of Frederick’s Medal card and a copy of the detail I have already given that came to me direct from Frederick’s son.A very rare set of items that are rarely seen these days with so much detail,please see the photographs for further detail.
