Description

WW1 Private purchase trench wristwatch in working condition. The wristwatch has a solid silver case which has London import marks for 1916/17 with a Gothic letter a clearly marked into the silver case with the London import mark, the case is also stamped 925 on the inside and on one of the lugs for the strap to pass through. The dial shows some age with only one small crack in the white by the number nine, this is hard to see without a eye glass and two other chips which are hidden by the top silver cover. The hands no longer have there luminous painted finish which is not unusual for a watch that is 100 years old.The movement of the watch keeps good time over a twelve hour period and loses some time over that sort of time frame which for a watch of this age is acceptable in my opinion, the movement has no marks at all but I would assume it is Swiss made as it has been imported. The hinge to open the back cover is good and tight and the case shuts correctly and forms a good tight fit but can still be opened without using a case opener, the silver case is 32 mm wide not including the winder.I have bench tested this watch over a 10 day period and it has worked without issue although its time keeping can be very good and then it can lose time which is down to its age and wear on the watch movement. The reason it loses time is when you adjust the hands they do not move straight away due to the shaft having moved, the shaft can be seen on the pictures of the movement and is right in the middle this can be very gently with a small flat ended item can be pushed back into place which then locates the hands and they then working in time with the movement you know when the shaft has moved because when you adjust the hands they move to freely. The other area to watch is the screw that secures the winder, this had to be adjusted when I first purchased the watch and this has stayed in place over the testing period.Watches of this age do have little quirks as it is 100 years old so please be aware of this and due to this its is being offered for sale as a display item not recommended for every day use,the watch is supplied with a replacement trench watch style leather strap.
The areas I have described as little quirks could be rectified if you know of a watch repairer with the spares to do the required job and the cost would be minor as the watch works very well, my watch repairer does not have the spares for watches of this age so I have no option but to give a good detailed and honest description on this very nice trench watch that was war time produced. Please see the photographs for further details.
